US Citizens, American passport holders do not need visas to enter and visit more than half the world's nations, countries or territories

By 2013, there are about 300 nations, countries or territories in the world. Some require most or all visitors to apply for a visa before entering, like China*, India, Russia, Brazil and Nigeria. However, American citizens can enter at least 160 places without having a visa in their US passport. Business or non-tourist visits may still require a visa application from an embassy or reputable visa agency.

*China has introduced 72-hour (3-day) visa-free entry for tourists at Beijing Airport. US (and 44 other countries) citizens holding third country visas and onward flight tickets can apply for a transit without visa (TWOV). This would allow enough time to visit the Forbidden City, Tiananmen Square and the Great Wall of China without a Chinese visa.
