Career and emotional crisis in mid-life
Many people some time from their mid-thirties upwards will experience what is popularly called a 'mid-life crisis'. The word 'crisis' literally means a turning point or 'crossroads' with a choice of two or more directions. It usually involves dissatisfaction over one's vocation, job, career – the way of supporting self and family financially, or an unhappy personal relationship. Often it's a combination.
Additionally, women go through menopause usually around the age of 50. While this is due to physical change in the body, mental processes are affected too. Mid life crisis is a mostly mental condition but there can also be physical symptoms and deterioration.
Midlife crisis comes about by perceived lack of success in coping with important issues and the stresses of life today. It can occur at any time between the ages of 30 and 60. Career (finances and the ability to provide for the present, let alone enough income for the future and retirement), boredom from years of routine business or social activity, separation or divorce (relationship change or failure) are some of the main causes.
Different people are affected in different ways. Symptoms include irritability, loss of sex drive (libido), impotence (erectile dysfunction), fatigue, low moods, inexplicable sadness, lethargy, lack of ambition and motivation and it can develop into to 'full-blown depression'.
Some will recognize this 'crisis' in their lives early enough and are still sufficiently motivated to do something about it. They look for ways to make major changes. Many look to professional counselling or guidance to look for a career change Others will move to another country, start a new business or find alternative ways to make money. Online business and other activities are probably the easiest in this respect as a computer with internet connection is really the only requirement.
Those who tend to keep problems of a personal nature to themselves may gradually withdraw from their family, friends and society and suffer in silence, possibly unaware of what is going on themselves. They need support and should be encouraged to seek help. This need not mean doctors or therapy. Often some inspiration is enough to trigger a recovery.
Without early recognition of the symptoms and one of several forms of treatment, either medical, therapeutic or both, depression can become a debilitating or even life-threatening condition. Levels range between a temporary feeling of low spirits all the way to suicidal feelings, if not actual attempts.
Hypnosis – regain your well-being through self-help
Generally, hypnotism gets a lot of 'bad press'; sometimes just the mention of the subject draws derision and claims of scam or fraud. In reality, learning how to use self-hypnotic techniques correctly can improve many aspects of one's life – physically as well as mentally. Hypnosis and more specifically self-hypnosis has helped many people cope with their mid life problems. Learn more on our hypnosis pages.
The Law of Attraction (it's not a new discovery, by the way, as the producers of "The Secret" movie would have you believe, and certainly not a secret) is gaining a lot of publicity from the recent exposure of both on leading US talk shows like Oprah and Larry King. Law of Attraction principles can be learned quite easily by reading one of the many books on the subject. Below, we recommend one that's actually free to download. There's a lot packed into David Hooper's 70 page book, and is a very effective guide to incorporating the Law of Attraction into your life.
The notion that the quality of our thinking affects the quality of our life is a time-honored idea, but author David Hooper puts old wine into new bottles with this book, showing how the Law of Attraction can help us improve our relationships, our careers, our health and the so-called "root of all happiness" money! Even if it's not for you, there is probably someone you know and love who could really benefit from learning the Law of Attraction and implementing it in his or her life.
Many people find themselves alone for one reason or another, but not usually by choice.
