Advantages of Learning the Local Language

There are distinct advantages to learning the language of the country you have chosen as your second or perhaps permanent new home. If you can learn the language you will gain a deeper understanding of the people and their culture. Of course it works both ways – they will understand you better! You will find in most Asian countries, with a couple of exceptions, that English is not widely understood outside the main shopping and tourist centres; especially in the countryside. Shopping, asking for directions, ordering food, staying in hotels and guest houses or at home dealing with domestic staff, government offices and more, will all be much easier if you can speak and understand the local language. And the local people really appreciate it if you try to speak to them in their own language too. You will make local friends much more quickly too.

Dictionaries, Phrasebooks, Translators, Talking Dictionaries

Finding your way around the country relying solely on maps and following road signs is going to ensure you always take the 'scenic route' to your destination, whether you planned it that way or not! Phrasebooks, dictionaries, translators (including Talking Dictionaries) are very useful tools, but developing a basic understanding of conversational grammar is easier if you study and practice using a computer or classroom-based training program. We have compiled a list of nearly 100 digital and talking dictionaries you can download, for 9 Asian languages here.

Besides English, many other language pair translators are available too: Spanish to Chinese, Russian to Hindi... you will find them all at this site. See below for more.

You Can Learn a New Language

While you may think, especially as you get older, that it's too difficult, it really is possible for anyone to learn a new language. It takes a bit of concentration and perseverance, but it's worth the effort!

You can also help others learn the Lao language and English

A 'cheap and cheerful' easy way to learn Thai for under $50.

Computer programs, translators and talking dictionaries for most of the world's major languages are available. And not only for conversion to English! See the huge choice of language pairs you can choose from Lingvosoft's vast product range here:
